Tuesday morning I woke up refreshed in the hayloft (my room name - not a real hayloft - open mic night did not get 'that' crazy). I showered, packed up (again) and having completed the 'bed' portion of my stay, I moved on the 'breakfast' part. Joining me at the well dressed table was a couple from the states (I forget which one) and a couple from Montreal. The Montrealers were cycling their way around Nova Scotia - Now that's an adventure! I was feeling envious until I remembered just how hilly this province had been… and I was quite sure that bicycles did not come equipped with Sirius Satellite radio- station 152 or otherwise. As we shared our adventures we laughed (or maybe more like groaned) about the lack of road signs and good maps. We all had maps that seemed rather incomplete - are the people of Nova Scotia trying to hide all their good stuff in an unmarked corner? The woman from the unknown state remarked that the fact that I've found my way so far proved I must have angels following me. Well I'm not sure about that but it is more lady like than my guess that I just had a horseshoe up my ass.
On that note (of directions, not asses), I asked Brian how I might find my way to the PEI ferry. We both agreed that map quest's idea to take only highways and make a detour through Halifax was ludicrous. He gave me a few options and of course I chose the most scenic. After a fond farewell I headed off on another road trip adventure!
Getting to this scenic route proved a bit of a challenge (I should learn better than try to follow vague directions) and I spent even more time than usual turning around. At one point I met up at the end of a road facing a sign which listed 2 destinations to the left of me and 2 destinations to the right. The only problem - NONE of them were listed on my map. So I got out of my car (of course there was no one else anywhere around), held out my map in front of me looking up and down my options of roads, summoned my inner navigation goddess and felt that right was the right way to go. Before long, I was validated by signs of places that I actually recognized - gotta love that horseshoe!
This drive was spectacular. I spent the next couple hours enjoying the view, getting out to snap the occasional picture and listening to Grant Lawrence. Ironically his show was focusing on road trips and he was reading comments from listeners about their favourite road trip adventures. Oh how I wanted to comment! This was definitely my favourite road trip and I wanted to share my wonderful adventures with Grant (I'm pretty sure we're on a 1st name basis). But alas there was no internet connection to be found so I sat back and enjoyed the show getting ideas for future road trips and listening to Grant's awesome road trip music selection. As I was blissfully driving with the beautiful Bay of Fundy to the left of me and wonderful farmlands to the right, I happened to glance down and realized 'ah s*** - I need gas!' I couldn't even remember seeing a gas station in the last hour and I was lucky to find a road sign let alone a gas sign. None of the few country roads seemed to lead to any sort of civilization so I did the only the thing I could - push the thought out of my head and keep going. About 20 minutes later I drove past a tiny gas station. Yes, I drove past it. I reversed (my new favourite gear) and pulled in. Thankfully they even had a washroom. Next stop - Caribou to catch the ferry to PEI!
