Hello, this is the first entry into our travel journal which we have just got round to setting up. We haven't actually seen any orangutan's yet but this was the only picture available. We met a few people who had a site set up so thought it would be a good idea as there's a message board so we can let you know what we've been up to and get some banter going. Also hopefully L&G won't block this site but you L&G people will have to let me know!
We arrived in Cambodia yesterday. So far we have been to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Chiang Kong in Thailand; Luang Prabang and Vientiane in Laos and Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. The best experiences so far have been the trekking where we stayed with hill tribes for a couple of nights and surprisingly, the Slow Boat from Chiang Kong to Luang Prabang. We got chatting to some people who just happened to have bought two bottles of Tiger Whisky for 40 baht (about 70p) a bottle. We proceeded to get drunk and have a sing on a boat full of people who probably didn't appreciate it as much as we did. When we stopped off for the night we stayed in a guest house in Pak Beng which cost 100 baht. However, the guys we were with swiftly nick named it Alcatraz as when they returned home from a few more whiskys they were locked in and had to break out. The next day we were the last on the boat and made our way to the back of the boat through a lot of unapproving stares to take a seat next to the engine. We were on the boat for another 7 hours or so and it wasn't quite the booze cruise it was the previous day but it was fun nonetheless. When we reached Luang Prabang there were hordes of touts trying to get us to stay at their guest houses, when one guy said there was a party room at his place we were sold and decided to stay there. We got the party room which we shared with a couple of guys we met on the boat and a few girls we met got a room down the hall, there was also a couple of crazy Danish guys there. The reason it was the party room was that it had a table on a balcony. Not quite what we'd imagined but we made it the party room ourselves. Luang Prabang was a really laid back place with a couple of bars which shut at 12 but after that was Vietnam Bar, an illegal drinking den that stayed open until the last people left, we were the last people left! After that we went back to the party room and continued the party till about 5 in the morning. The next day none of us felt to clever and spent most of the day recovering until we decided to go and take on the locals at a game of football. We turned up, a World XI of Brits and Danes to take on a Laos side which comprised of about 17 people, none bigger than 5 foot 8". We lost three times out of three!
We've just spent a few nights in Vietnam. We met our Thai friends who had a few days off for a bank holiday and went with them to Halong Bay and around Hanoi. We then flew down to Ho Chi Minh, having not planned our trip as well as we'd hoped, where we visited the Cu Chi tunnels and I shot an AK47!
Today we have just been walking around Phnom Penh and in a minute we're off to visit the palace. In a couple of days we'll move onto Siem Reap and then back to Bangkok before going down to the islands to do some scuba diving and to hopefully meet up with Mr Mike Hyden (for those of you who know him) at the full moon party.
Hope to hear from you all soon on the message board!
