So we decided to empty our bank accounts on a five day cruise around the Galapagos islands after much deliberation. We flew from Quito to Santa Cruz via Guayaquil and arrived at the airport which more resembled a garden shed. We were taken straight to our "cruise liner" which was more like a glammed up trawler boat. For the first night the boat was permanently listing at such an angle that we had to hold on to the sides of our beds at night and James' spag bol slid of his plate onto the table. On the first day we landed on an islet off Santa Cruz, we saw loads of blue footed boobies, red chested frigate birds and 3 metre long land iguanas that lve up to 70 years old! Just to let you know, if you havent already guessed, this blog will probably sound a lot like a David Attenborough programme! The best island we went to was Espanola island we saw the massive albatrosses attmepting to take off and land, apparently it takes them up to four hours for them to land becuase they are so big, we also saw the blue footed boobie mating dance which was quite funny. The name boobie is french for clown! Every island we went to we saw loads of seal lions and we were allowed to lie right next to them. We were told that they were very friendly although they did start chasing after us if we got to close, they seemed much more friendly in the ocean where they would play with us and swim besides us. On the Floreana island there is traditional Galapagos postaL system which relies on the tourists that visit the island personally delivering other peoples postcards. Will is bringing one back to Kendal and we also have sent a couple ourselves, whether they will ever get there...who knows. Also the guide sent us into a lava tunnel on the island, claiming that he had to wait at the top to prevent other groups from coming in. Personally, we think he was scared! Probably the highlight of our trip was snorkelling just off the island at a place called the Devil's Crown which is an underwater volcano with the summit poking out of the water creating a ring of rocks. The visability there was amazing and we could see down to the ocean floor, we spotted 3 white tipped sharks, a sting ray, jellyfish, green and black turtles and millions of brightly coloured tropical fish. It was just like Finding Nemo! There was also an underwater tunnel that we went under and Will cut his leg open on the coral, probably not the best idea considering we were in shark infested water!
