Will and Deidre's adventure through Europe
Cannes is definitely glamorous and EXPENSIVE. (Will made Deidre run from a restaurant for the first time in her life. No, not a dine and dash, but we sat down, ordered water, looked at the prices on the menu, and as soon as the waiter turned the corner, sprinted out of the restaurant as fast as our legs could carry us!) You can't even get a can of anything to drink ANYWHERE for less than 2euro, which is 3 american dollars, but it is worth it because it is BREATHTAKING!!! We spent most of our time on the beach and walking the coastline which is lined with designer shops. We didn't even bother going into any, they post prices in the windows and, hmm hmm... um... a tiny trinket is way more expensive than our entire 3 week trip. We saw the red carpet (and took a picture on it), where in 10 days movie stars and their flashy cars (and entourages) will be convening for the annual Cannes Film Festival. They are already starting to prepare, with fancy tents and around the clock security guards that look like they mean business!
We went to the island of Ste Margurite on a ferry, which has the fort where the man in the iron mask was imprisoned for 11 years, which was pretty cool. The fort was built on top of the roman city that was inhabited from 1+ BC. We can't even fathom how long ago that was. The Mediterranean waters near the island are pristine! You can seriously see for miles underwater (once you get away from the yachts and ships). Around the island were battle stations where canons and weapons were stored and used, and the island has a rich history hostile take-overs. Don't worry, now it is a national park so we were safe, but we did consider our own hostile take over, but thought better of it. That prison didn't look that comfy.
