Rome was different than expected. It is green and hilly, and the city is nestled in between all of it. After arriving on the plane from the beaches near Venice, we were freezing!! Rome was about 10-20 degrees cooler. We went straight to the hotel to drop off our bags and change. Then we hit up a locals mostly trattoria for what I thought was incredible pasta and pizza. Although Adam did mention that if we keep waiting to eat until we feel like we are starving, everything is going to taste like the best thing we ever ate.
Then, back to our hotel for sleep and rest, and straight to the Vatican City the next day. The Vatican Museums and Sistene Chapel are almost like art sensory overload. There is so much history, incredible art and artifacts all rolled into one space. Every inch, including the floor, is a masterpiece of execution and elegance.
We were all worn out from walking the entire museum and grounds, including seeing the beautiful St Peters Basillica and Vatican Square.
We grabbed a quick bite and rested on the train, going the wrong direction, before hitting the town. Narci spotted some professional soccer players from AS Roma on the train. We saw Trevi Fountain in the rain, ate gelato at the top spot in Rome, took pictures at the Capitol, strolled many a piazza, and winded through the streets enjoying the sights and scenery.
The kids and I lost Adam and Jeff for about 20 minutes near the Collisium, but other than that the day went very well. We originally were planning on staying two days in Rome, but the coronation of Italy's new president was Sunday, and half the city was being shut down. There was security and barricades set up everywhere. So we saw the Collisium at night, instead of during the day, and planned a day in Florence instead.
We literally walked for 12 hours straight, but saw amazing architecture, ruins, history, and culture. Despite all the walking, I'm pretty sure we are eating plenty to keep up.
