We made it through the mountains through Lucca and stopped in a small town called Pistoia, deep in the heart of Tuscany. We were planning on going to eat, but ended up at a local grocery store instead and picnic'd in the van, as we head to Venice.
We had to take an alternate route due to a freeway closure, and it probably took us a little longer with the crazy rain. We only saw one accident, two Mercedes in just a small fender bender on the side of the mountain, could have been much worse. Mercedes are like Toyotas are in the US, they are everywhere. Those and smart cars. We have seen several Alpha Romeros, but mostly in the richer areas. There are TONS of semi-trucks up these mountains, as it connects cities like Pisa, Florence, and Bologna.
The mountains are beautiful, wooded areas thick with pine trees. I'm sure this is where they get the pine nuts for their pastas. We tried to find some pine nuts at the grocery store, but didn't have any luck. Everything is so green and lush. I'm not sure if the seasons change this, but today, it is completely green and beautiful. In the Vatican, there is an enormous wall size painting of the Garden of Eden, and it is seems to have been inspired by this area of Italy, or something very close to it.
Kylie was finally able to Skype with her class, and she had a blast, if only for a few minutes. Her teacher is really cool, and has the kids Skype with a class in Spain. Kylie has just loved, loved, loved her teacher this year, so I think she mostly wanted to talk to Mrs Q. The kids thought it was funny that we were calling from the front of a grocery store, but that was the only place to get good reception.
Off to Bologna!
