Hello all, from Byron Bay….again! Only Sam and John today as Tors has been struck down with a terrible case of blisters so is currently sitting in the hostel with a magazine! We are currently checked out of our hostel and waiting for our bus to Brisbane which leaves at 4pm, so we thought we would update you with what’s been occurring!
We have all loved Byron so much, leaving with many fond memories. The town itself is quite small, but has loads of lovely little bars, restaurants (which we can’t afford!) and a couple of clubs, which we managed to budget for!
We arrived here, early afternoon on St. Patrick ’s Day…conveniently…and checked into our hostel. The hostel itself has been our favorite, he most friendly and has the most character of all the places we have stayed. I’m sure you’ve all seen the pictures of the rest of our evening!
On Thursday, we did a daytrip to Nimbin, the hippy capital of Australia; again the photos give a good idea of what type of town it was, with many offerings of ‘happy high herbs.’ Nimbin itself was very small, but our tour guide was fantastic and was very knowledgeable and passionate about the local aboriginal culture, so we got to learn loads along the way. We also got to visit some beautiful tea tree lakes, and waterfalls, where we got to jump off 10 metre cliff edges, and swim around in the lagoons. We also got the chance to throw a boomerang, and of course I (john) was a natural.
‘No offence mate, but has anyone ever told you, you throw like a girl?’ were his exact words If I remember correctly…
Much of our time here has been spent on the beach here, which is one of the best beaches we have ever been to- never too busy and only a short walk away from the town. The sea here has an unbelievably strong and relentless current, which made it rather hard for us to brush up on our surfing skills- after all, we are all pros now! But the water is warm and crystal clear. The weather has been consistently good, and the warm evenings have meant we have enjoyed sitting outside and eating dinner.
Maybe one of the most worthwhile things we have done here, is walk to the lighthouse to see the sunrise, however after a week of relaxing, we had all forgotten just how early 5am is! Worried we would miss it, we rushed up to the Lighthouse which sits on Australia’s most easterly point but lucky got there just in time, and despite a few clouds the view was amazing!
We have had Liz cooking for us all week, which has been a lovely change from Spaghetti on toast with chocolate spread for afters, and so despite Johns one attempt to cook poached eggs and spaghetti- following a heavy goon session- we have been eating well. However, last night the girls surpassed themselves by befriending a French guy who cooked for us all and about 10 other people. It was bloody amazing, some of the best food we have eaten here, and well worth the $6 food kitty, so full up and totally contented with our stay here, we are ready to move on to Brisbane!
We only stop in Brisbane for a day, so probably shant be updating again until we settle in Noosa.
Happy times! Love to you all- Sam Tors and John xxx
