I stayed at Lake Balaton for 3 nights in total, it was great. I spent most of the time next to the lake or in the lake, which was great. The whole area is full of Hungarian holidaymakers, as the summer holidays just started. I ran into an aussie bloke named Nick who had been at my hostel in Budapest, which was funny. The hostel at Lake Balaton was completely new, and only has been open for 10 days, so it was pretty quiet. Played frisbee in the lake, and relaxed most of the time.
On our last day there, the owner of the hostel, Arpat, drove us up to one of the vineyards (it's a large wine region). We tried some red, a merlot which was tasty, so I bought a bottle of that... Then we went to Arpat's father in laws place. The guy had built it himself, the cellars, gazebo, bar... everything in roman style, it looked awesome. He only produced white wine, but it was unlike any I've tasted... bought a bottle of that too...
Yesterday morning it rained there so it was good timing to get the train to Slovenia. About a six hour trip from Balaton, and we went through a bit of Croatia as well. Once we arrived to Ljubljana, Nick and I parted ways, as he was going to meet a friend of his. I went hostel hunting, and the first one I went to was full... Funny thing was, I ran into a guy there who I'd been in Cesky Krumlov with.... names Matt... small world. They found me an available bed 10 minutes away, so I dropped my stuff and headed back to his hostel to chat with him and a group of 3 Irish guys. Went to a quiet bar for a drink with them and hit the hay.
This is a really cool city, built along a river, with a castle on the hill. Plenty of cheap cafes along the river to have a coffee and a bite. I'll upload some photos of Balaton and Ljubljana now so you can see....
