What a day... yesterday found lodgings in the larger town with more hiking. Quite comfortable and yet again including a tasty breakfast. After brekky, I went to the supermarket, and bought 3 rolls and salami for $1 :) Then got my trusty map out, and picked the highest peak within a days trekking. Picked a place called Slavkovsky Stit. Stands at 2452m. apparently it was a 10 hour round trip. I couldnt even see the peak, as it was completely covered in cloud. I just wanted to do another trek before leaving to Krakow in the morning. So I set off, and after about an hours easy walking, it began to rain. I put my raincoat and stubbornly continued. After another hour of climbing the initial hill, the track changed to rock. it was basically just climbing from boulder to boulder, and now there was a really heavy fog to accompany the rain. As I got higher, the fog cleared up a bit, and I was able to get a bit of a view of the mountain range looming in the fog. It was hard going, and all there was to follow was blue paint stripes on the rocks every few hundred metres (check out the photo and you'll understand). The rock scramble continued up and up for about 3 hours, but suddenly, the fog cleared and the rain stopped. I looked down the mountain, and all I could see was white. I had cleared the clouds, and figured I was about 2000m up. It was just stunning.... it was also getting cold. My map cheerfully informed me that technically, the temperature dropped 0.8 a degree every hundred metres of altitude gained. So having climbed 1000m it had maybe dropped 8 degrees. The terrain looked like what I would imagine the surface of the moon to look like. And it was completely quiet. I pushed on to the top, and my hands were absolutely frozen, I reckon it was definately under 3 degrees. At the top, I stripped off my wet t-shirt, and very quickly slipped on a thermal top, a jacket, and a spray jacket. Sat up the top eating my lunch. Unfourtunately the cloud was moving around very quickly, and I didn't get a great view. I was still stoked. Then I began the looong walk down, the cloud cleared after an hour and I got some great photos. So now I'm sitting in a cosy internet-bar, throwing down a local beer.
