It was a short trip to Arequipa. Mostly we prepared for the trek in Colca Canyon. But the city was definitely worth more exploration, beautiful buildings, lots of city to explore and history to be learned.
Colca canyon was one of those places on our trip so far where we really wish we had more time. The scenery was gorgeous, the people welcoming, and the trek grueling. We should have expected it but somehow before we started our trek IN and OUT of one of the deepest canyons in the world, we did not recognize that we were in for hours of steep ups and downs. Our knees soon complained about our lack of walking poles. But we were joyed by the scenery and by the experience as a whole. The canyon was dotted with small villages and we stopped in one for a night. We played cards and enjoyed our end of the day treats as we overlooked the landscape. Dinner was a local treat, cuy (guinea pig), as fresh as it gets. It was good, similar to chicken but a little fattier, but neither of us really feel the need to make it a staple of our diet.
We made our way out of the canyon tired and sweaty and sad to leave after too few days. We then returned to Arequipa and made our way by another overnight bus to Cuzco to meet Molly's mom and sisters!!
