Our first introduction to Brazilian people beyond our tour guides was quite wonderful. We arrived in Campo Grande, a large city on the edge of the Pantanal, late at night. It had been a hot and cramped 6 hour van to get there. We were tired and hungry and a bit overwhelmed by the large city and the Portuguese language. We had only a credit card to pay for dinner, after one place that only took cash we walked on and someone who had overheard approached us offering help in English/portuguese. He worked at the hotel next door and they had a restaurant where we could pay with card. We left him with thanks and slight tears in Molly's eyes. As we walked towards the hotel another man came up to us asking if we needed help, we explained we were just going to this hotel here for dinner. Turned out he was a guest at the hotel and he was happy to talk about Chicago and traveling with us as he showed us to the restaurant. He helped us get situated and then left us to our meal. This was all a bit of genuine kindness at just the right time :) welcome to Brazil :)
