So it begins…Bangkok!
My first impressions of the city were good, I think I prepared well mentally as it wasn’t as busy or polluted as I expected, no more so than London anyway.
The roads however were a completely different ball game and how I can only describe as “Wacky Races” (I’m Todd the Little Mushroom BTW)
I could tell quite quickly this was my kind of city. With fresh fruit sold on every corner (Pineapple…Mmm) and the Thai’s obvious love of the colour pink, including everything from their Taxis to Vodka and Pringles.
I didn’t feel out of place here apart from my Snow White legs (Which are now more Lobster Pink…despite Factor 30!)
I must also mention the amount of Bridal Shops in Bangkok…I’ll let you draw your own conclusions! (Michelle these made me think of you :)
Tuk Tuk's were fun and you quickly learn how to haggle your price.
In Bangkok and Kanchanaburi (West of the capital) we visited a WW2 Allied War Cemetery, The Death Railway Bridge and Museum over the River Kiwae, a beautiful waterfall which Dan climbed and where I had my first true Thai toilet experience (not pretty!) and my highlight of this leg of our trip…Tiger Temple, getting up close and personal with these amazing creatures (and well cared for, I must mention – Gran!) We also visited three stunning Buddhist Temples which has left me intrigued about the religion.
In the Tourist area (Koh San Road) we experienced the true Thai haggling culture which is a bit of a culture shock, but you soon get use to it!
We went to a Fish Spa and had our feet nibbled (Mum you need this…no picking!) and sampled the delicious Thai cuisine which proved a little too hot for Dan, though he gave it a go!
Our time in Bangkok finished with a little window shopping at the Siam Paragon in Siam Square, one of Asia’s largest shopping malls.
To sum up Bangkok in 3 words…No Highway Code! Ha! Or on a more serious note…Colourful, Haggle and Delicious!
Now on the island of Koh Samui...watch this space.
P.S. Anday: Your friend was right about “Thai Time”
