Waterloo Sunset (well OK it was a Tobermory Sunset but nobody sung about that!)
After a relaxing day tidying up after the reunion we set off on Monday morning bound for Tobermory - a small town on the Bruce Peninsula on the edge of Lake Huron & Georgian Bay and where David & Lillian have a holiday cottage. It was about a 3 hour drive, however we stopped several times on the way, firstly to pick some fresh beans for dinner the following night, secondly for a coffee break at Tim Hortons (a Canadian institution, more prevalent than McDonalds, selling coffee, donuts and sandwiches) and thirdly again at Tim's for lunch - a nice chilli with bread followed by a donut!!!! Once we got up there we headed for the visitors centre to learn about how the great lakes were formed, the wildlife around and the places to see. There was also a tower (aka wooden structure) which you could climb to get views over the area. We took a slight de-tour on the way home to go via the Lighthouse on the peninsula.
We then went out for dinner where I got to try a variety of Canadian specialities - baked brie with red pepper jam, calamari with Thai dipping sauce (OK maybe not this one but it was still delicious) followed by local white fish with a parmesan crust. It was here we got to watch the Che-Chimon Ferry which connects Tobermory with Northern Ontario as well as the wonderful sunset over the harbour. It was an amazingly quick sunset with it disappearing almost instantaneously and darkness forming.
The next day we packed up lunch and went on a hike around Lake Cypress to the Grotto via a rocky beach. We got to see some spectacular scenery as well as a family consisting of 2 adults, 3 small children and 3 dogs getting into a small inflatable rowing boat (an almost impossible feat!) Once we got to the grotto Dad & I decided to practise our rock climbing skills much to Mum's displeasure as we scrambled down into the base. It was definitely worth it as I got to go for a paddle and we got some great photos! After all the walking we had done we decided it was time for a treat and so went home via what was to become my favourite food shop in Canada (Tim's is a close second!) Beavertails. A Beavertail is a piece of puff pastry deep fried with your favourite topping - we choose chocolate, Smarties with a drizzling of Peanut Butter. All I can say was that it was delicious and you definitely need to share it with at least 4 people.
Later that evening and again Wednesday morning we went into Tobermory to explore the shops. I found this very difficult as I am not good when I can't spend money! I was however very easily able to identify the Ice Creams Shop and enjoyed sampling some local favourites! There is now a new addition to the Top 3 flavours with Moosetracks (vanilla with chocolate and toffee swirls!) - yummy! It was then back to Lillian and David's for one final night where we went to enjoy the local cuisine - Indian which was yummy!
I would just like to say a huge Thank You to Lillian & David for letting me stay with them and taking me to so many beautiful places. You live in an amazing area and I hope I come back one day to visit.
