Well, disappointed! We got up at 6:15am and walked to the dock to get the ferry to the Dry Tortugas only to find out that gale force winds were forecasted and the trip was cancelled...up early for nothing!!
We headed back to the guesthouse and did a few different things (slept, caught up on facebook) and headed out about 10:30am to have lunch at Willie T's. Would you believe they can not serve alcohol in Key West until noon on Sunday's due to the fact there used to be so much navy and it was a navy regulation? Somewhere in the world that has a liquor legislation slightly tighter than Australia!! We managed to finish our lunch just after 12 so had mojito's to finish off the meal.
Next port of call was the lighthouse as it was closed on Christmas Day. It is right opposite Ernest Hemingway's house. It was quite interesting to see the history of the lighthouse (the original was swept from the coast during a hurricane so the replacement was built inland) and the view from the top was amazing! Further down the street is the pylon marking the southernmost point of continental USA (it's not the actual spot but the real one is on navy property so this is the next closest!). People were waiting in a line longer than that for a Disney princess to have their picture with the giant pylon! It was quite amusing!
We then wandered along the coast, visiting Higgs Beach, the African Slave Memorial and the AIDS memorial and wandering along a jetty. It is built almost like it is supposed to be a bridge with tarmac along it so locals call it the unfinished bridge to Cuba as Cuba is only about 90 miles away.
We headed back along Duval Street to meet Tara for dinner and headed to Margaritaville. This is Jimmy Buffet's original Margaritaville. We had dinner (and a few cocktails) and then headed to Captain Tony's for a drink. This is one of the places pointed out on the ghost tour as Elvira is supposed to haunt the ladies toilets...not such luck this time!
Brianna and I then headed back to the guesthouse (I have to be in a state to drive in the morning) to pack and have an early night, while Emma and Tara kicked onto the Green Parrot so we shall see what state they come home in!
