The last time I saw my cousins who live on Long Island was back in 1983 when my mother, brother, and sister flew from L.A. to N.Y. to attend my cousin's wedding. The last time George and I saw some of his cousins who live on Long Island was back in 1988 when they flew from N.Y. to L.A. to attend our wedding.
One of the main reasons that we decided to go on this journey was to visit family; family that we haven’t seen in a very long time and family whom we have never met. So for us, Long Island, NY was a very rewarding island to visit as both extensions of our family greeted us with open arms.
Poli’s side:
I called my cousins to let them know that my family was in town and about this crazy journey we are embarking on. My cousins, even 20 years later were just as welcoming and easy going as I remember in the past. "Come over, we have plenty of room, how many nights can you stay?, can’t wait to see you, we’ll get everyone together, etc." It was that easy. We went to Long Island the following week and had a relaxing, touching visit, and of course ate really well because on top of everything else they are fabulous cooks! I got to see all of my cousins who are my mother’s youngest brother’s children (although my uncle wasn’t there this visit I got to see him the following month in FL). My cousins met my children and I met theirs who are all grown up now.
Having recently lost my mother, it was very important to me that I reconnect with my cousins. I shed many, many tears during this visit. It was the right thing to do and the right place to be. My cousins loved my mother and took wonderful care of me.
George’s side:
As luck would have it, we were already on the east coast when we heard that George’s cousins had planned a 90th birthday surprise party for their father (George’s uncle) and what a celebration that turned out to be. Up until this point, George and I had only corresponded with his uncle by email, quite a few emails actually, vowing that someday we would finally get to meet each other in person. We were so fortunate to have been able to attend this celebration. Not only did we finally meet George’s uncle, but we also met one of his aunts, several cousins, and some 2nd cousins for the first time. It was obvious from the family and friends that attend this party how admired and loved George’s uncle is. He is truly a hero ya know. He flew in WWII and to this day humbly receives honors and accolades for his dedication to the service. Finally getting to meet him was truly a gift to our family. George and I are both hoping that we are deserving of a 90th bithday party like this . . . someday!
