We left Hawaii on Feb15 and flew for four and a half hours to reach San Francisco. We are in a new time zone, now just 8 hours behind the UK. San Fran is really busy, loads to see and do - but after our beach break in Hawaii we were happy to be active again: We were staying just next to Union Square - really central. On our first day we walked around Chinatown, always an interesting tour and up and down many of the steep hills - from some we had a brilliant view of the Island of Alcatraz out in the bay. Alcatraz was a prison for many years, where some of the nastiest criminals were held, including Al Capone. We took a famous street car back to Union Square.
Next day we visited the SFMOMA - museum of modern art, which is always entertaining - some great stuff, other 'installations' were a pile of pants (not literally, though they could well have been). They had a good little education centre where Floss and Max could look at art books and draw their own versions of Dali and the like (Max does excellent Miro reproductions). We then visited Fisherman's Wharf and wondered around the piers and tourist tat. Floss and Max ate dinner at the Rain forest Cafe which they enjoyed. On Wednesday (18 Feb) We took a bus out to the famous golden gate bridge and walked part way across, enjoying the views across to the city and bay, and also down onto the water a couple of hundred feet below -scary! We took a bus down to Golden Gate park where we visited the California Academy of Sciences which had some great exhibitions including an aquarium. In the evening we ate in a great restaurant in the Italian enclave of north beach.
On Thursday we travelled out to the pacific coast (Ocean Beach) then visited the Legion of Honour museum for a special exhibition of Fabergé & Tiffany. Floss had seen a picture of a Fabergé egg and nagged us for days to come and see the display. It was pretty impressive to see such bejewelled eggstravagance (sorry). Later in the day we had the obligatory zoo visit to check out the Siberian and Sumatran Tigers and the Grizzly and Polar bears.
Friday 20 Feb our next flight - we keep getting further east - to Denver. Another hour closer to home, GMT minus seven. Next update from Denver and the slopes of the rockies..!
