Lake Balaton is a freshwater lake in western Hungary. It's a major holiday destination with beaches, volcanic hills, resort towns and high-rise hotels along its 197km shoreline. The hilly north shore is a wine-growing region, with protected wetlands and hiking trails at Balaton Uplands National Park. The town of Veszprém has a walled Castle district, and 13th-century frescoes at the Gizella Chapel.
We decided to take a boat ride on the lake today. It was only a short journey of an hour. The boat follows the lake shoreline, but because the lake is so shallow you cannot get close to the shore itself. In the early days of Europe, the lake provided a means of transport goods around to different to different towns.
The next thing on Brian and my list was the Cadillac museum, which was just up from the apartment. The girls wanted to catch the little train that runs around the town. No doubt they were looking for another driver like the one they got in Zadar.
The Cadillac museum was very good and quite busy. The cars were well restored and ranged from some very early models to ones in the mid-seventies. One of the vehicles was used in the Godfather movies. Well worth the visit. Brian and I headed off towards the town square to meet the girls. We just sat down to have a beer and the girls turned up. It seems the train wasn't running today, but they did take a look at the Palace, which they said was very nice.
Our next stop was the Medieval Erotica Museum. I think it best said, it was an eye opener. The girls did take few pictures, but even the phones were beginning to blush. The old days weren't so boring after all. I would suggest they fought the wars and poured hot oil on each other on the weekends and played around during the week. Little wonder the wars lasted for so long.
It was time to explore the town further, so we decided to visit the PIAC markets area. As it was in the early afternoon, the markets were closed. However, it is quite a large area, and I am sure would be a hive of activity when it is open. The road through the markets took us down towards the waterfront once again. When we were down there, we spotted some Segway's, and they were very reasonably priced. We made a commitment to get a ride on them tomorrow.
Our next move was to go to the railway station to book our tickets for the next won we will be staying in. The girls had met a couple in the laundry whilst doing the washing, and they said the train trip was good as it followed the lake. It takes longer than going by bus, but the train trip is much better.
The tickets were organised and we made our way back to the apartment. It was quite a busy day, and we saw a lot of the area.
We left for John's Pub to have tea. The pub is next door to the apartments, and the meals are superb. The only downside is the mosquitos. Tomorrow we will come prepared!
