The next few days was really just us working our way down France as we had no set destinations of yet. Waking up the first morning abroad we discovered that slowly overnight the condensation on the outside of the tent builds up and then seeps through the tent material, meaning that if you touch or knock the side then it rains inside the tent. I'm not overly fussed by this but to the other half of the party this is horrific...
After checking out the market and castle ruins (including dungeons) of Domfront we got our first of many pain au chocolat, which would turn out over the next 2 weeks to be our main source of food. We headed down through Craon, Ancens and La-Roche-sur-Yon before reaching the coast and finding a campsite just as it was nearly pitch black in La Terriere.
Day 3 saw us eating pain au chocolat on the car bonnet and driving further south through La Rochelle, Saintes and along the N137 which was a really nice road with beautiful surroundings. After lunch in a layby we made it around Bordeaux and along to the bay of Arcachon. We got a site overlooking the bay and went off to a supermarket, the fish counters over here are unbelievable!!
Awoke to the sound of ducks, hundreds of ducks, just quacking. Non stop for hours all they would do was quack. We left the quaking behind to get to the Dune du Pyla and it was a good choice as it was very quiet and not to hot. Totally amazing view from and of the biggest sand dunes in Europe. My flip flop broke on the way back to the car and this was a low point as this was there first bit of serious use and they just couldn't hack it. The coastal road south was great, highly recommended, nice pine forests and after an ice cream stop we arrived in Spain without even realising it as there was no evident border post. Got lost in San Sebastian and then headed along the coastline which was hard driving. Very beautiful but the hairpins and constant ups and downs really take it out of you, even Joey was worn out as when we arrived in the campsite in Mutriku for the night she could be found asleep in the passenger seat. Pizza was the order of the night and after driving around the town to no avail we set out on foot in search, this only confirmed to us that we were in a serious Hicksville area and we had to retire to the truck for a feast of coco pops and half a baguette.
