We have had an adventurous few days on the windward side of Oahu, the lush green and wild side. We are staying in a small settlement called Haaula and it is a short drive to Laie and The North Shore. Yesterday's adventure was snorkelling at Pupekea beach, also known as Sharks Cove. It was incredible! We swam in a protected bay with shallow water and a natural rock breakwater around us. Waves occasionally washed over the rocks into the pools creating a wild waterfall effect. Meanwhile, when we stuck our heads underwater with our snorkel mask all sorts of fish abound! Schools of them circling me, lone colourful fish swimming against the current, long ones, skinny ones, fat ones, it was simply amazing what we saw!!! I kept hoping for a turtle but because it is winter it is less common for them to come ashore. It is winter on Oahu so we have had some rain, which has come in quick intense showers. But mostly it is warm and humid.
Today's adventure around the area included a jungle tour at Kuoloa Ranch. We went riding through the jungle full of wild palms and big trees and mountains so magnificent. The views were spectacular, the guide funny and interesting, and the silliness of going through some of the movie sites which this part of the island is known for. Jurassic Park, 50 first dates, Lost and many more were filmed here.
The rest of our day was at the Polynesian Cultural centre where we delighted in a Luau with a roast pig from a fire, a huge buffet with some local delights and an awesome show with dancers, cultural music and costumes from 5 Polynesian countries. It is a huge outreach of the Mormon church here and Brigam Young University uses their students to run this massive cultural centre. It is really well done. I learned a lot about these cultures, and am even more intrigued to go to some of them. Tonga, Samoa, Tahiti, Figi, New Zealand are all in the Polynesian family, and I could see a trip to some of them in the future.
One more day left....I am not entirely ready to come home!
