THURSDAY
What to have for breakfast? Another morning goes by but my first day of teaching begins with a successful order of 6 dumplings - albeit with 6 chicken wings thrown in for no apparent reason. That would explain why the meal came to £3 and not 60p!
So… the teaching. The reason I’m here. My classes went pretty well to be honest. I found out that you need to be very prepared but on the whole, it’s like trying to maintain a conversation with strangers for one hour. I’m supposed to have 5 classes a day but sometimes people don’t turn up so you just prep for more classes.
It’s quite funny though when I say something and they repeat it with my mumbled, Essex accent. For instance, “time” may be pronounced “Tom”. Or "subtitles" pronounced "subtotals". And then I have to really get my mouth moving! And speaking of accents… you can guess for yourselves how one of the girls pronounced “accent”…
Anyways, it was a long day and I didn’t feel like dumplings so I bought some crisps for dinner and went home to clean. Unbeknownst to me, there’s a festival next week called Dragon Boat Festival and for this I’m given 2 bottles of wine, some rice cakes, 8 bottles of fruit juice and 2 bottles of expensive olive oil. Cheers.
When I get home I realise I still haven’t text this girl or downloaded ‘WeChat’ so the plan tomorrow is to buy some essentials (frying pan, chopsticks, a blender (smoothies for breakfast)) and some credit.
