Twizel is the "town" (pop 1000) at the end oflake Pukaki. We'd noticed the day before when topping up Valentina with water that we'd got a large puddle of water underneath the van. Yes - a leak in the fresh water tank. So on Monday morning we tried to get it fixed in one of the only 2 garages for about 200km in any direction. Not possible. So we headed south for Alexandra to get it fixed & which was on the route for our Otago Rail Trail adventure - 150km off road on the bike over 4 days across some of the most empty & spectacular landscapes in NZ.
So let's talk about Alexandra(pop 4300) - that would make it on population terms about 4X Vaux en Beaujolais. On our NZ Road Atlas, Alexandra is on page 72 and overlaps onto page 73. Each page covers an area of 70 X 95 km - about 700km2 - so allowing for overlaps, pages 72 & 73 cover about 1200km2.
So……………..in 1200km2 you have
Alexandra - pop 4300
Clyde - pop 900
Roxburgh- pop 500
Otherwise - nothing, nada, neante, rien, no people, NOTHING
This is the middle of NOWHERE.
So…………Vod & Stewart set off on their 4 day adventure to cycle 150km along the Otgao Central Rail Trail. The railway that was built between 1870 & 1904 to link the big city "Dunedin"and the gold fields/sheep stations in the interior and that was closed in 1990 & converted into a cycle path.
