Sunday 16th June
We woke to a little drizzle, 9' and no wind. It needed to be an early start as we needed to fill up drop the ablutions and head to Curtin Springs, before Kings Canyon. It was a bit of a gamble not fuelling up at Yalura with our 5c voucher. Curtin Springs was 216.9 and didn't have a dump!!! What a rip off!!! $161.46 and 74.75lts. Oh well can't win them all.
Stopped for our usual stretch and cuppa and caught up with one of the families we had met along the way. They had just been in at Kings Canyon and the price of fuel there was 233.9, another ripoff!!! But they did tell us to ask for a back spot at the caravan park as you get a great view of the Canyon. We arrived at Kings Canyon after following the range for miles, it was spectacular. Chris and I caught up with a couple of loads of washing as the weather was good. The dingoes were close last night, twice I could hear them howling. There must be pups with them as their howl is a bit more high pitched.
The following morning at 6.00am Glenn, Chris and Roger were doing the Sunrise Rim Walk which was to take about 3 ½ hours. I got to sleep in as it was a climb up a 100m high ridge and then a walk around the top of the canyon. We were originally going to only spend one day here but in the end stayed two so I went up and rebooked. I made the Cauliflower Cheese to go with our Silverside for the evening meal and washed all our towels. The others returned about 11.00am for an early lunch and I got to check out their photos and videos, unfortunately they didn't get a good sunrise photo. They covered other areas while up on the ridge going to other offshoots like Cotterill's Lookout (named after the original couple who discovered the canyon and turned it into a tourist attraction) and the Garden of Eden was accessed by a wooden staircase. The Garden of Eden was a beautiful billabong surrounded by Cycadas Palm which date back to Jurassic times. The canyon was formed after the inland sea dried up and then cracks started appearing through the various layers of sandstones which gradually got wider and wider eventually caving in on itself. The walk totalled about 7.5kms. After lunch we headed back to the canyon so I could do the Kings Creek Walk. I couldn't get all the way because it involved walking in a riverbed of boulders. Glenn had to go to the end to take pictures for me.
All the washing is now dry and put away, dinner is ready and it's chill out time.
Off we go again tomorrow, Virginia and Glenn
