Saturday is mainly just a travel day on our way to Utah.
The early part of the day we traveled through the National Grasslands (I didn't even know there were such things). The terrain was somewhat rolling and, of course grassy. Then it was on to ranch lands. We saw some wild deer and antelope in the fields. It took all my will power not to break into Home on the Range. It is my job to watch for wildlife, a job I am not well suited for. The first deer I spotted, I thought they were cows. (Don't laugh, they were way off in a field.). Then when I first saw antelope, I thought they were goats. I do seem to be getting better with practice.
At lunch time we took a small detour to view some historic sites. First stop was the Oregon Trail ruts. There was a two to three foot deep rut through the sandstone rock. They had some interesting informational plaques on the migration and the nearby forts used to protect the travelers.
Next stop was Register Cliff, a place I had never heard of. This is a big sandstone cliff on the Platte River where travelers carved there names to commemorate their passing. Many of the names were dated in the mid 1800s. It was sort is sad thinking of all these people taking a dangerous journey which many never finished.
Today was also our first real glimpse of mountains, the cover picture for the day.
