Day 71 New York Wednesday
Our last day before heading for home. Today was not going to be an overly taxing day.
We walked up to 47th Street in Time Square (3 km each way), bright and early, to purchase tickets for a Broadway musical matinee. You can buy reduced price tickets to shows for that day from a ticket outlet. Matinee tickets go on sale at 10.00.am and evening tickets go on sale at 3.00pm.
We arrived at around 9.00am and were about 6 from the start of the line. We had decided to see the musical, Kinky Boots (Wicked tickets were not available unfortunately L). The story is based on a real life tale. However literary license has been applied to the story. The music is by Cyndi Lauper.
The story is of Charlie Price who inherits his family's shoe manufacturing business which, due to change in style trends, is in financial difficulties. When, by accident, he meets Lola (a drag queen) he comes up with the idea of going into the niche market of making "Kinky Boots" for cross dressing males. (What one would call a questionable financial decision.)
There is the conflict between some of the factory workers and Lola and her/his friends but like all good musicals it has a happy ending that has the audience on their feet clapping along.
We were under the impression from the ticket seller we would probably be about 7-8 rows from the stage depending how far the stage extended into the theatre. As this is usually our preferred range for seats we were thrilled. Also the price was much less than we had anticipated from our online investigations, even with the 50% discount. Tickets in hand we walked back to the apartment to start to tidy up before returning to the theatre later that day.
Imagine our surprise to find we were in the centre of the front row come show time. We had good views into the orchestra pit (2 guitars, 4 violins and 2 keyboards) and were about the same level as the conductor.
Vince is still in shock and possible therapy after the close view of the drag queens in some of their skimpy costumes J J J.
After the show we walked home to begin packing in readiness for our 10.00-10.15pm pick up for the airport.
Only managed 12 km today. However, we did manage around 100 kms walking in 4 days so we can indulge ourselves with the puff pastries in the Cathay lounge.
