Day 70 New York, Tuesday
Today was another walking day to see "must see places of New York". In most cases we walked to the sight and took photos from the outside. As much as it would be nice to go inside and have a closer look around many of these attractions, it starts to become an expensive exercise with all the admission fees charged. One can only absorb so much history at museums.
We started by heading uptown along the Highline as it went further north than we had yet realised on our first night.
This brought us out close to the Hudson River bank on 12th Ave which later becomes Henry Hudson Parkway.
Here we came to the Intrepid Museum. It is a tribute to sea, air and space all housed within or next to the Intrepid Aircraft carrier. The deck of the carrier has an assortment of aircraft displayed as well as the space Shuttle Enterprise. On the other side of the pier is a British Airways Concord and docked nearby is the submarine USS Growler.
Along the river bank is a lovely parkland where many people were walking, bicycling, jogging or picnicking. We were in the former category.
At around 76th street we headed east and came to the Museum of Natural History. Again we took photos from outside and the foyer before continuing on through the top part of Central Park we had not seen on Saturday. This took us for a walk ½ way around the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir.
Exiting on the east side we walked up 102nd Street to Lexington Ave. This is where Lauren and Adam has stayed. It verges on the edge of East Harlem. No scary people were seen!
We headed back down 5th Avenue checking out the exterior of the apartments where doormen opened doors, greeted they residents or stood in the middle of the road to flag down a taxi. A number of these apartments have colourful gardens against the front of the building.
It must have been change of season as most of these gardens had recently had new flower arrangements placed in the gardens or they were in the process of change over. There were some gardens that just had small evergreens hedges or small trees. It was quite pretty.
At 71st Street Margaret detoured to inspect the apartments in this street where a Audrey Hepburn's character lived (Breakfast at Tiffany's). It was a little difficult identifying the actual apartment.
Further down 5th Avenue we came across the museum mile including museum of modern art (MOMA), the MET, and the Guggenheim.
Moving on we managed to make to 59th Street (the start of Central park). Before long we had walked to 42nd Street where we entered Grand Central station (along with many others) to find out what all the fuss was about. It is a quite magnificent structure. It has two levels of tracks with people coming and going. If you want to see a mass of people visit Central Station around 8am or 5pm.
After spending some time in Grand Central station, we continued on to Macy's where we had a walk around. In previous days we had also sighted other up market stores in mid-town such as Loius Vuitton, Barneys, Chanel, Saint Laurent, Sax Fifth Avenue, Valentino, Tiffany & Co, Cartier, Armani, Bulgari but to name a few. Needless to say, it was window shopping for Margaret. The credit cards were tucked away!
After another big walking day (31kms) we headed home to rest our feet and legs.
