Omis was once home to corsairs, who used to launch raids from this now sleepy little town. We visited the remnants of the pirates' fort up on the hillside above the town. It was a hot climb up to the fort and at times the pathway was treacherous - Croatia certainly has a different health and safety code from the one at home! The views from the top were worth the sweat soaked brow and there was also the promise of an ice-cream at the bottom of the hill to look forward to. A small tower has been restored, so we were able to climb up the ladder inside it and emerge up onto the roof to survey the coast below and mountains behind. This is a good area for adventure seekers, with lots of terrain for rock climbers and a river suitable for rafting.
Back down in the township we found our ice cream and stalls selling fresh fruit, including the largest watermelons I've ever seen. There were also lots of stores selling piratical souvenirs - but we avoided these, preferring to save our money for Montenegro.
