Arrived in Ho Chi Minh City (aka Saigon) 4 hours ago and have already taken 2 "coffee" breaks - simply to get something cool to drink and to be able to sit inside somewhere in airconditioned comfort!
Man, this place is hot as hell! Motorbikes weaving in and out and roundabout. We thought we'd take a walk to the Ben Thanh Market to have a look but you need to have a serious, death-defying desire to shop or be a complete masochist. At the first stall, the seller dragged me by the wrist and wanted to charge me £10 for a crappy t-shirt. I walked out in disgust and that was the end of the shopping trip. I just don't have the stamina, patience or energy for haggling.
We went to the HCMC Fine Arts Museum which is in a beautiful turn-of-the-20th century building. Nice collection of paintings but the heat was stifling and some of the wings were closed due to new exhibition installations in progress.
We're currently escaping the heat and reclining on some comfy sofas in the Highland Coffee Shop.
I miss Hoi An already...
P.s. HCMC, you have redeemed yourself somewhat. We went to the Rooftop Gardens at the Rex Hotel - beautiful setting. Whilst it wasn't the best food we've had in Vietnam, the views were amazing and the breeze was a welcome respite from the scorching heat.
