A late start today as the weather was playing up and it was raining again in Punalu'u. I'd wanted to go to Lanikai but we checked the live webcam online and it looked like it was even worse there so we ended up heading to the North Shore.
First stop: lunch at Fumi's Kahuku Shrimp roadside food truck. The shrimp ponds are out back so you're guaranteed fresh produce, even if it is deep fried! We also got fresh iced coconuts and pineapple juice from the stall net door.
After lunch, we headed to Laniakea to see the Hawaiian Green Turtles that feed on the algae and kelp near the beach. There are many people snorkelling in the water - trying to get a close encounter with the aquatic life - but there are volunteer wildlife monitors on hand to keep an eye on the turtles and to make sure that people don't get too near to them or handle them in any way. I believe that Hawaii has run a very successful programme to increase the numbers of turtles and this is certainly working well for the environment.
In the afternoon, we swam and suntanned on Sunset Beach. Only 18months ago, on my previous trip to Hawaii, I witnessed 30foot waves and raging riptides on this same beach!
