The Blue Mountains
This morning we left the hotel at 7am, to meet the Oz Experience coach which was taking us to the Blue Mountains. The first stop was at a clearing at the base of the mountains, where we saw some wild kangaroos. We then stopped at a small town for breakfast, and also went to an eco-centre near to the mountains. The main part of the tour was a bush walk along the edge of the mountains to Wentworth Falls, which was about three hours long. We saw some beautiful views, learnt about Aboriginal culture and stopped in some caves along the way. At the end of the walk there was a lunch of salad and sandwiches provided, which we made the most of!
The next stop was to see a trio of massive rocks called the Three Sisters - we crazily decided to walk down the really steep stairs so we could step on the first sister, and then struggled to get back up! After that we walked down 'the 1000 steps of death' to the Scenic Railway. I thought it would be a continuous row of steep stairs, and was a bit disappointed when it turned out to be a casual walk with an occasional set of steps. Having said that, Angie realised my worst nightmare when she fell down some of the stairs near the end. The Scenic Railway at the bottom was like being on a rickety old rollercoaster - I didn't know whether to do the 'theme park scream' or actually scream in terror as we moved up the almost vertical track to the top. We were given some free time in the Scenic Railway tourist area, and then we were dropped at the YHA hostel in Katoomba. The hostel is in a beautiful art deco building, with huge kitchen and dining rooms, so we made the most of the facilities, and bought some food from the supermarket for dinner, and breakfast and lunch tomorrow.
