"It's Fiji Time!"
We effectively lost a day flying to Fiji, because we flew over the timeline, which was quite confusing! In the airport we were greeted by a traditional Fijian guitar trio while we queued, making everything so much more laid back - our first experience of 'Fiji time'. We booked our Fijian itinerary at the airport too, which the rep did by hand; there wasn't even a computer in the room.
We eventually got to Beachcomber Island, our first stop, after a four hour wait in the airport, a coach and a boat ride. The island is tiny, with only one hostel on it, and you can walk the entire perimeter in 10 minutes. We stayed in an 80 bed dorm, which was quite daunting for our first time, and there were only netsto serve as windows and doors.
In the evening we went for dinner, which was included in the accommodation price, and then there was some Fijian dancing and entertainment. Beachcomber is supposed to be the 'party island', but we were exhausted after being awake for almost 24hours, so we went to bed at 11pm! As I was lying in bed I saw about 10 mice running in and out of the beds, which, as you can imagine, made me itch like crazy all night. Luckily I was on the top bunk - I don't think I would have slept if I had been nearer the ground!
