I was planning on writing this tomorrow, but because of a change in plans we leave for Florianopolis tomorrow morning and I don´t know what the situation is internet wise from here on in so I have decided to do my update now. This will be my last one from Laguna, which makes me very sad indeed, but I guess we all have to move on at some point!
Carnaval was... indescribable, amazing fun in many ways but also at times a bit too much.. It started on Thursday night, with the crowning of ´Miss Gay Queen of Laguna´and continued until Tuesday. The biggest day and night was on Sunday, where everyone dressed up and partied for as many hours as their feet could last for. Although this was probably the day that was the most fun, it was so claustrophobic at times because there were basically 500,000 people crowded into a town that normally has a population of just 150,000..... We ended up dancing for 9 and a half hours. Straight. But to be honest, there are no complaints because I have had probably some of the best days of my life at Carnaval. Everyone is just so happy, so excited, so much fun that you can´t help but have a massive grin on your face for the entire time. If you haven´t already, check out my Facebook for the pictures- I have put all the ones from each day/night that I have.
One thing that me and Caitlin found though was that the customs here during Carnaval are very different, especially with regards to the guys.... I can only describe it as a mixture of Capital VIP with Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, in that the guys just wait in the middle of the street for girls to walk past and then just grab whoever takes their fancy.. And when I say grab, I mean grab. Caitlin has had her nose bitten, her eye licked, her arms pinched, just because guys think that it´s alright to force girls to kiss them during Carnaval.... I´ve had my neck yanked, and was genuinely locked in a grip by a guy that slyly came up behind me and hugged me so tight I could barely breathe. When I tried to run away, he lifted me up off the floor... I had to slap him in the face in order to get away. I swear me and Caitlin have been kissed by so many boys, not out of choice but because they don´t take ´No´ for an answer! I even ended up putting one of my rings on my wedding finger to try and persuade people ´Naõ, tengo una namorado!!´(I have a boyfriend). Eeeesh. So that was a definite low point, and at some points me and Caitlin were sworn off men altogether because the experience was so off-putting... But we met some great people, danced every night to great Latin American music (´ohhh, oh la em casaaa..´- for Gizelle ;) ), drank many a Capeta (just the most amazing drink I´ve ever come across), and all in all had an unforgettable time. We are definitely going to try and come back here for Carnaval next year.
So, since then, nothing much has happened at all, we´ve just been relaxing, catching up on sleep and getting ready to move onwards and upwards tomorrow morning. I am going to miss everyone here so much, I have made such good friends already and I will be truly sad to leave- Gizelle, Izis, Gustavo, Camila, Fatima, Severton, Cleidie... you have all been such a big part of my travels, thank you all so much for making the first leg of our adventures so wonderful, I really am so grateful.
I will update whenever I can, and as always, missing you all tremendously.
All my love, Vick xxxxx
