'Verity's Travels'
Hey!
Can't believe it's been two weeks since i last wrote an entry, time is going quick! I think I got up to telling you about Byron Bay, well we enjoyed our time there and then headed to Surfers Paradise. It reminded me of Miami (well I think Miami is a bit nicer but if you've been there you'll get the idea). It was torrential rain so we had to spend our time wondering in and out of the shops and we went to a real surf club diner, something like the one out of 'Home and Away'!
After Surfers we got the Greyhound to Brisbane where we were first told that we were in a 32 bed dorm, but got moved to a 10 bed one instead thank god. The hostel was very lively but good fun, I enjoyed the bar-b-que looking out at the pretty city skyline. We spent our third night in Brisbane at a different hostel and ended up eating our spag bol amoungst a wedding reception as the members of staff had got married that day and had their recption there! Brisbane was good for shopping and there were some lovely walks by the river. The nightlife was good too! We went out on the Thursday and Friday night and as there is a big student population and there are loads of backpackers too it was really busy which was good. We went to a backpackers bar called Down Under (thank you Adam for taking us there, I really enjoyed it!) and then a club right by the river that had amazing views.
Saturday and Sunday we were in Noosa, it was very unspolit there and beautiful. Went on a sunset cruise and got very snappy happy and ended up taking about 40 odd pictures of the sunset. It was amazing though so it was justified! The buses stopped running though at 6pm in the evening which caused a bit of hassle, but once we were at our hostel we ralexed as it was really chilled out. Sunday was spent at Australia Zoo, home of Steve Urwin the Croc, Hunter. He did a show and did some crazy stuff like getting in the water with them. Saw lots of kangaroos and one of them had a joey in it's pouch (it was very cute). Got to hold a koala too and have a photo taken, it's one of thsoe huge ones that you get like when you go to a theme park, but it's quite amusing! It was like holding a heavy todler but it was adorable!
Monday we spent at Hervey Bay as we were going to Fraser Island from there. Fraser island was soo much fun. It's the worlds largest sand island so the only way that you can get around is in a 4 wheel drive. There were 9 of us in ours. The 'roads', well the beach as that is what you drive on was very bumpy and we got thrown around lots in the back but it was awesome! We camped on the beach and waking up to the sound and sight of the sea was great. we got to swim in beautiful crystal clear waters at Lake Mckenzie(the photo at the side is Lake Mckenzie and went to Eli Creek, Champagne Falls and Lake Wabby. We went for a trek in the rainforest too. I can say it was some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. I totally understand now why those of you who have been rave about it! Oh and Bryony, Eleanor and I cooked a stir fry on the beach with a camping stove for all 9 of us.... we were quite pleased with ourselves! We did nearly get attacked by a dingo though (they are a cross between a dog and a fox and can kill people and that's not me exaggerating!). Two came towards us and ran off with our tent bag. one of them showed it's teeth to me!
Saturday was in Bundaberg and with it being Easter weekend most things were shut so we hung around at the hostel most of the day, but we had a really cool hostel, a converted police station with cells (some of the rooms were padded cells). It was luxuary for us (after having to dig holes in the sand to go to the toilet on Fraser Island). There was a cinema room there, a dining room with massive plasma tvs, it was just like no where I've stayed before but to be fair I haven't been to jail before!
Sunday was in Rockhampton, like small town Australia and yesterday we were in Mckay which was a bit bizzare! Our hosel was a bit odd, very small and in some wooden house. There were only about 20 people staying at the hostel and we bumped into some randoms from Uinversity of Surrey! The girl was on Eleanor's course and the guy did management and even knew Bryony before they went to uni as they have mutual friends at home. Hel also lives about 2 mins from me at home too! It was a relief they were there as the hostel was a bit dead. We went ot a bar and I even played card games (I didn't just sit and watch like when I was in Kavos last year, Kat, Gem and Ness you would have been proud!)
Well, that just about brings you up to speed with what I've been up to. In Airlie Beach now as we are going sailing to the Whitsundays tomorrow for three days and I'm so, so excited, it's meant to be beautiful. I'm going to snorkel too. I'm sure snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef will be amazing, I've heard from those who have gone. I'll let you know how I get on and hopefully won't be attacked by jellyfish!
Hope you're all well and please do keep me informed about what you are up to in England.
Verity x
