The Big Trip-
After years of thinking about this trip and almost a year of planning and training, I'm finally at the start of my cross-country bicycle trip! In some ways it's hard to believe it's finally here. In other ways, it seems like it has taken forever to get here and I just want to get started.
I have no idea how long it will take. I only have one deadline. My niece, Sian, is getting married in South Dakota on July 11th and I don't want to miss that. My general plan is to bike 50-60 miles a day and take a day off every 4 or 5 days. But we'll see if I stick to that or not. I've never come close to taking a bike trip this long, so I don't know what is realistic for me. But that's all part of the adventure!
As a reward for getting to the start of the trip, I thought a little pampering was in order. So, I'm staying at the Hotel del Coronado on Coronado Island just across from San Diego. This place is beautiful! It sits right on the beach and has restaurants, shops and spas galore. Since a lot of my nights for the next several months will be a bit 'rougher', I thought this would be a great treat before setting off!
Tomorrow morning, I will start my ride from Ocean Beach. The plan is to bike back to Phoenix, across the desert now, before it gets too hot. Then I'll rest for a couple weeks at home before heading north to Colorado. I don't want to get into the Rockies before June so as to reduce the chances of hitting snowstorms. Since they just had a big storm in Denver, I'm really glad I'm not there now!
I'll continue to update my blog with pictures and posts. I'm also starting a Google map so that people can follow my progress. Technology is wonderful, but I don't want it to become a burden, so updates may only be once a week or so.
