First post in a couple of days. Actually writing this from the train going to our next destination, Bled in Slovenia.
Budapest was awesome. Really cool place. On the first day, after a horrific night train from Prague, we made the long trek to Margret island in the middle of the river Danube. This was where the hostel was. Island hostel it was called and it turned out to be the coolest place we've been thus far.
Looking over the river when it was sunny was well nice. Vikter, the owner we think, showed us some of the places to visit whilst we were in the city. The baths were the main attraction of the day!
It was a monster walk from the hostel to the baths; but when we got there, and after the initial shock of departing with a large amount of yet another ridiculous currency, the walk and money were well worth it. The baths were so good. Loads of different pools with different temperatures and even a couple of whirlpools that we all loved. Especially Coates who genuinely nearly killed three old women in said whirlpool.
We had a meal out planned. But the stark realisation of the lack of funds drove us to rethink our spending strategy. Subway was the viable option, as it would be for our time in the Hungarian capital.
We decided to go back the hostel and chill there for the night, save some forints for the next night. For the first time we actually had some cool people staying in the hostel with us. A group of Irish lads and an Australian bird. So we had a decent conversation with them for a bit, until lack of sleep took over.
I fudged up yesterday. Hold my hands up in shame. I tool us on the wrong tour. We were meant to be going on a free walking tour but low and be hold I panicked and followed the first crowd. A group of Erasmus students...
We ended up chilling in the park for a while and then we headed back to the island with the intention of going to one of the bars Vikter had shown us in the morning. After yet another subway we headed in the direction he showed us.
The bar we ended up in was one of the coolest I've ever been. An open air bar Budapest style with a jazz band and cheap beer. Everyone of my family would have loved it. I don't know if it had a name. I doubt it. I could have stayed there all night but we moved on. Not wanting to sound like weirdos but we followed this group of people down a side street as they looked like they knew the place to be.
The bar we walked into looked quite frankly like a bombed out house from the outside. When we walked in it was crazy. Without doubt the strangest place I've been in my drinking career. Basically a house that the skins crew had taken over. Writing on the walls, obscure paintings, random furniture. A paradise for those arty types. Loved it.
We ended up back at the hostel at about 4am.
Today we had the intention of doing the walking tour at half ten... No chance. We did our own after cake and a pizza roll.
All in all I loved Budapest. Not sure if it was as good as Prague though. I'll have to think.
Until the belting Bled!
Silver and Gold.
