Today is our last day in Lima and we had booked the bus for 2pm to take us to Cuzco. We had a parcel to post to the UK so had left this small task for the morning. We had been told not to wrap the package in advance but to take it along with the wrapping with us. Arrived at the Post Office and queued for some time, we eventually got to the head of the queue and it went something like this:
Me and Nick (VN) - Hola Senhora can we send this parcel to the UK por favor?
Senhora Postmistress (SP) - Are you crazy do you know how long it will take?
VN - We have time how much will it cost?
SP - shrugs her shoulders and inspects the parcel. I will have to dismantle this gift to check for drugs.
VN - ok senhora no problem.
SP - It has no cocaine pass me your wrapping paper so I may pack it for you. You may have drugs on your person that you may slip in while packing it.
VN - ok senhora how much will it cost?
SP - shrugs her shoulders and asks for ID.
VN - Nick shows his driving license.
SP - You will have to go and get a photocopy of your license.
VN - Nick goes off to find a shop with photocopier. When he returns we rejoin the lengthy queue. Finally get to head of the queue.
SP - Inspects photocopy and asks us to put address on parcel.
VN - Add address and ask how much?
SP - shrugs and passes us a form to complete.
VN - Nick completes the form.
SP - Inspects form and fingerprints Nick for form????
VN - How much?
SP - 156 soles (30 GBP).
VN - Nearly fall through the floor but have already spent 2 hours here so feel there is no way back but to pay.
SP - Adds about 180 stamps to the parcel thankfully it is big enough to accommodate all these stamps.
VN - Leave post office in shock 156 soles worst off but confident she has added enough stamps.
Got the bus at 2pm, we had paid to go 1st class which was only 44 pounds each including food. Could not believe the bus it was like business class on a plane, wifi, leather seats TV the works. Just as well as we are on it for 24 hours.
