Woke up to glorious sunshine this morning which was perfect as we had planned to do the Ruakiri Bushwalk. Previous experience of walks has led me to believe that the trails are all laid out and that walking boots are not necessary; I therefore set out in my flip flops. 20 minutes in and we were walking up some steep hills which were very muddy and at this point I considered going back, however we managed to slide down a bank and got onto a much more formed path so I decided to plough on. Oh what a mistake this turned out to be as 10 minutes later I was on my backside in the middle of a mud pool with a hint of cow s**t! Now I had been considering a mud bath at Rotarua @ $50 but managed to get one at Ruakiri gratis and a free lecture from Nick thrown in for wearing flip flops. Decided to abandon my flip flops as I kept on losing them in the mud and do the last hour of the trek barefoot which proved a better plan. When we finished I was covered in mud and cow s**t which was going to be a problem as we were again parking in the pub carpark tonight so had nowhere to shower. We got back to town and went out exploring for shower options and we were in luck as we found a campsite which didn't have security locks so we did some Royal Marine Commando manouvers and managed to sneaked in! Departed 15 minutes later very relieved that we had not been caught and smelling of shampoo instead of s**t!
