Van Trip 2007
Day 58
Kilometres travelled.......227
We left Airlie Beach at 9:25am after saying farewell to Max & Marie and Barry & Di. Travelled straight through to Cape Palmerston without a stop. The road north and south of Mackay was not good due to the rough surface and road work.
We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Cape Palmerston Holiday Park which covers 63 acres, adjacent to the beach at the northern end of the Isaac Coast. The Park is situated 10 kms east of the Bruce Highway from Ilbilbie and is accessed via all weather sealed Greenhill Road.
The Park, set adjacent to a quiet, secluded beach, is a unique getaway isolated from the hustle and bustle of city life. The rural outlook towards the distinctive 344m Mt. Funnel creates a relaxing atmosphere that lets you re-energise and reinvigorate. Kangaroos and wallabies graze the open grasslands whilst many species of birds inhabit the coastal woodlands. Spacious drive-through sites make parking trouble-free.
For those inclined, Beaches and birdwatching, fishing and crabbing, national parks and four-wheel-driving makes the stay relaxing. We took the nature walk through to the beach, and watched the waves roll in to Knobbler’s Creek.
The nearby Cape Palmerston National Park, accessed by 4WD either through the inland (dry weather only) or via the usual pleasant drive along the beach, is known to a select few as a perfect spot for sightseeing.
This park was excellent. It is located about 70 kms south of Mackay, all the sites are drive through. We rated the amenities block as the best we have seen in all our caravanning days, we gave it 6 stars.
The owners of the park, father, mother and son, were very friendly and introduced us to some farmed local prawns which we enjoyed very much for dinner that night.
The owners are in the process of completing a Camp Kitchen made completely from timber, which will be magnificent when finished.
Jude & I vowed to return to Cape Palmerston when next we visit North Queensland.
