Van Trip 2007
Days 59 to 60........29th to 30th August 2012
Kilometres Travelled.....288
Stopped at Marlborough Roadhouse for lunch and then proceeded to St Lawrence to have a look at the off-road van park. It was reasonably full and looked a bit dusty.
Marlborough is a small town located 106 kilometres north west of Rockhampton, and lies on the Bruce Highway. In 2006 Marlborough and the surrounding area had a population of 355. The town, first established in 1856, is a small service centre for the surrounding area, and one of a number of fuel stations on an isolated stretch of highway. The town has a school with only a few students. Marlborough is famous for producing the world's finest Chrysoprase, a semi-precious gem once coveted by Alexander the Great and Cleopatra. The small but high-grade deposit is located about 20 kilometres from the town and is universally regarded as the most valuable find in the world.
St Lawrence is an even smaller town located 802 kilometres north of Brisbane and 6 kilometres off the Bruce Highway. In 2006 St Lawrence and the surrounding area had a population of 195.
Once a prosperous port town, exporting cattle from the hinterland, most residents are now railway workers. The town is located south of St Lawrence Creek, which flows into a vast bay known as Broad Sound, a waterway noted for its large tidal range (up to 9 metres in the summer).
We arrived in Rockhampton early afternoon and checked into the Riverside Caravan Park to find that we had been allocated our favourite site on the Fitzroy River Bank, site 115, at a cost of $29.70 per night. We had completed a lot of sightseeing on previous trips, so decided to relax for 2 days and enjoy the view across the Fitzroy River from under our awning.
Rockhampton is located on the banks of the Fitzroy River, approximately 40 kilometres from the river mouth and about 600 kilometres north of Brisbane. In 2011 the population was 61,724 .
The Berserker Range lies on the eastern side of the city, with the Athelstane Range to the west. The coastal area to the east of the city is known as the Capricorn Coast, with the rapidly growing town of Yeppoon its major centre.
Rockhampton experiences over 300 days of sunshine each year, which lends itself to tourism activities all year round.
The European history of the area began in 1853, when the area that would become Rockhampton was visited by the Archer brothers and Thomas Mitchell, who had explored the area in 1844 and 1846 and noted suitable land for grazing.
The Fitzroy River provided a convenient waterway for shipping of supplies for those who followed them, and a settlement grew on the riverbank just downstream of a bar of rocks which prevented further upstream navigation from the coast. These rocks were incorporated with the traditional English term for a village, and the name "Rockhampton" was first used.
