4 days and 5 nights have gone by very quickly and we're on our way for an epic adventure! We arrived in the evening on the 1st after a flight from Delhi and a 4 hour drive from Jodhpur. On the drive we were introduced to driving in India with plenty of driving on the wrong side of the road and avoiding cattle. We settled into our accommodation and enjoyed some curry and a Rajastan vegetable dish with a view of the Jaisalmer Fort. Very nice! That evening we found out that our Canada visas would be released at 3.30am on the 3rd which ruled out an overnight camel trip, but we were still able to do the sunset trip.
The next day we explored the city and Fort in the morning, registered for the race and become acquainted with our tuk tuk that will be our primary mode of transport for the next two weeks! The painter has done a very good job, except the blue is darker than we intended. We have named him Elton. That afternoon an evening we went on a camel trek which was cool, but very uncomfortable! Certainly won't be signing up to a race on camels! After a traditional Indian desert meal and playing around in the sand dunes we were driven home and managed to squeeze in a few hours sleep before waking up early to apply for the Canada visas. Got them! Whoop whoop!
The next day we heard that there was a sand storm last night with 100kph winds so we were relieved that we ended up staying in the hotel last night. Today was our first day at test driving as Elton ran pretty well. Van was probably the better driver with Matt stalling a few times. Lots of time for improvement though! Once we felt fairly competent we headed into town with our new mates from the UK (Tommy and Georgina) for some Rickshaw Run shopping.
The next two days was spent test driving, sorting out everything we'll need for the next two weeks and the opening party. Now we just need drive for a few thousand kilometres in a well painted rubbish vehicle. Can't wait! :-)
