We rolled into Berlin at around 3.30 Thursday afternoon. Our activities for the afternoon:-
>Popped into our accommodation based in Mitte
>Wandered down a shopping street in Mitte, taking a look at the famous Brandenberg Gate and then having our third roast pork variant (standard roast for Van, Pork knuckle for Matty) at Maximillions. Washed down with a tasty øl or two.
Friday
> Started with a visit to Checkpoint Charlie, and to the section of the Berlin wall preserved at Niederkirchnerstrasse, and to the 'Topography of Terrors', a museum at the former site of the Third Reich's Secret State Police (Gestapo) , the SS, and the Reich Security Main Office.
> Went out to Charlottenburg, attempted to do a little shopping - was pretty busy with the New Years sales on.
> Tripped back to Alexanderplatz on the metro, browsed a couple of shopping centres there and Matty managed to buy a couple of "colourful jerseys" :-)
Saturday
> Successful shopping morning with a walk down the local shopping street and Van managed to find some shoes she was after.
> Checked out the East Side Gallery, a section of wall remaining which was painted in 1990 on the east side as an 'international mural of freedom'.
> A little bit more shopping in Alexanderplatz
> Nana nap in the arvo and then off for a beer at the local Löwenbräu followed by dinner at Nante-Eck. Again, we had pork! Making the most of our last cheap meal before back to the expensive land of Norway, we topped this off with some apfelstrudel and a few beersies.
Sunday wasn't very eventful, plane hopping and a somewhat frantic time at Oslo airport which meant we didn't even get a chance to pick up some duty free - rats!
All in all though, we had super fantastic winter/christmas/NY holiday which felt longer than the 2 weeks that it was. We can definitely see that the more places we visit, the more we will want to visit!
