Well.....our plan of a night bus to save on accommodation worked very well for one of us.....the other had no sleep.....after our long journey we decided to treat our weary feet and get a taxi to near the 'Auberge Ayoub'.....after a scandalous quote of 300Dh we got him down to 15Dh each.....but that was Marrakech Dh which actually meant 50Dh each.....we fought and then paid a little more than the original quote as it was 0540hrs and we both wanted a bed.....
The accommodation was easy to find.....however.....waking the owner proved difficult at 0600hrs.....but we did and managed to get a few hours kip before heading off in search of a map of the Haute Atlas region.....after a small deception leg we managed to reach Marrakech's bookshop (singular)....more miles on weary legs didn't pay off....plans would have to change.....and change they did....
Investigation into the cost of a car for the last week proved very reasonable....and after a maths breakdown that Carol Vorderman would have been proud of we decided that money and hassles saved on public transport would be a good trade off.....a nice (and possibly genuine?) hire car dealer later and we have wheels (we hope).....he gave us some very good advice on routes and places that are nice.....fingers crossed he gets to the right Bab tomorrow??:/ we are looking forward to leaving Moroccan cities behind us and seeking out the quieter and more gentle Berber life...
Our impressions of Marrakech are that it's streets are wider and a little less frenetic than Fes......some bartering to be had which is less aggressive and a maybe slightly less boisterous place than Fes? The goods on offer are better than Fes for metal produce but not for leather....but it is still a city and what that represents....
The market place in Fna at night was really good fun with all the food stall vying for trade in a friendly way and a genuine no pressure tact....we had a 'The de Menthe' and a pastry whilst soaking in the ambience of people eating 'tete' (head) in various sizes and oily egg rolls....we then found out just how much sugar is in a glass of our new favourite drink.....think we may be diabetics by the end of Morocco??:/
Tomorrow brings some driving in the 'Haute Atlas' and the 'Sahara Desert'.....maybe a sleep in a Berber tent? Who knows now that we can free wheel a bit more??? :)
