Wow Lagos!!!! There is so much to say about this place its hard to find somewhere to start........ So I'll start at the beginning I guess...... When Lara, Justin's sister raved about how nice an fun this little place in Portugal was we just had to see it! We flew here from London around the 8th of August and after traveling over 12 hours on trains planes buses an trams we made it into this picturesque little town with cobblestone streets an mini lane ways lined with bars restaurants music an people everywhere! It was about 2am and the place was goin off!! After navigating our way to our backpackers we dumped our bags and went exploring..... first stop was RedEye bar. Jason my cousin told me about how his mate from Curl Curl owned it an it was a definite place to go check out, he wasn't wrong! It's been named the Aussie bar of Lagos an was full of surfing pics an movies, Steve Erwin at the front door an chicks in bikinis on posters all over the walls, not to mention all the staff are pretty much Aussies. Schooner, the owner welcomed us straight away when I dropped Jason's name an from then on the fun began.....
We bar hopped around for about an hour an could of gone to see Pendulum play but didn't have the energy after all our traveling so we called in an early night excited for what this town could offer us over the next few weeks.....
The next week was all days at the beach in the hot Portugal sun an quick dips in the freezing cold water then every night out exploring the endless bars and clubs in this tiny town. Every lane had at least a few with different music, crowds an entertainment. The streets were a massive party on their own full of backpackers, mostly Aussies, loosing all their self respect an living up to the saying 'Lost in Lagos'. Iv never seen so many trashy girls doing body shots an passing out in gutters, body paint, booze cruze parties on the water, shot comps, dancing on bars an tables, jumping from windows, 5am beach parties every morning when the clubs close, big name DJ's all the time an it just goes on an on. This place is insane!!!
But it's not all party party, if you chill out an actually make it up early in the mornings there are amazing beaches full of caves and breathtaking little trails to explore, the cliff walk which takes at least 2 hours along the most amazing cliffs overlooking the Portugal rocks scattered along the coastline. Then the kayaks which you row through the caves and tunnels into secret rock pool hidieholes, the water sparkles this aqua green and all the rocks under the water are as clear as if they were right in front of your eyes. It's so beautiful!
We had a few dramas at first.... Justin only stayed about 2 weeks. We had a few arguments, turns out he had BIG feelings for me an when he saw me with another guy he cracked it hard! He disappeared from Lagos for a few days leaving me only an email saying how much he liked me an couldn't be around to see me with anyone else, it was too hard for him. Also, My bag was stolen... I was mugged on the beach by 2 big Portuguese guys who everyone calls the 'Slippery Gypsies'. There are a lot of robberies around here and me not knowing went off from the group an they got me, took my whole bag, wallet, money, camera, everything! Stupid idiots!!!! I chased them but didn't catch em :( I guess you get that everywhere though....
I got myself a job at RedEye an was hoping I'd get loads of work but there was already so many staff that I was lucky to get 3 days a week and it was only paying 30 euros a night which is nothing. My money ran out super fast an then I was pretty much living day to day. Justin was all set, he had loads of cash so had no need to worry but I came with barely anything an things were getting a bit tight.... Juz decided to go back to London with Lara his sister and because we weren't on the best terms I decided to stay alone. I moved into a new backpackers while working at 'Surf n Turf' in exchange for free accom but the place was a complete dump! After a few days I had to get out an moved into 'No 18' where a lot of staff from around town lives. It's an amazing 3 story mansion that's been turned into a backpackers an it's so so nice!!! Marble staircases, massive balconies an nice bathrooms but its full of about 30 others all my age traveling an working their way round the world.... Couldn't have asked for a better place to live an it's only 10 euros a night :)
But the season must come to an end and I happened to come right at the last part of it! Over the last week about 20 or more of my good mates here have moved on an the towns slowly getting quieter. Iv got heaps more work though but it's not as much fun now an after being here for weeks I'm ready to get back to London an earn some real cash so I can travel with Carmy in October .....
But I will never forget this crazy little town called LAGOS!
So iv just arrived back in the UK after spending about 2 months in Lagos but had to add to my Lagos adventure because the ending was probably the most eventful!
I met a new bunch of people (because all the other guys left) an they lived in 'the fun house' right in town. There was Emma, who became my new bestie, Andy, Jac an a few other guys an girls who lived there too - awesome people again! Emma an I met an instantly became best buds spending every day an night together for the next week till I left. We danced an partied an ran a muck! One night we were 'chest bumping' (like how guys jump up an smash their chests together) an she fell backwards an cracked her head open on the brick wall! After spending about 4 hours at the hospital she came out with 5 big stitches! Then the next night we were cracking wood on the wall to make a barbi when some wood flew back an hit her in the eye making a cut hahahaha so many injuries! We turned into a pair of guys but it was so much fun. We're gonna do a road trip together soon.
So I finally had to leave an after a massive goodbye night running around town I caught the 12 o'clock bus for my 4.30 flight thinking it would be plenty of time.... After changing buses 3 times I made it to the airport by 3.30 an got into a massive line of people, by the time I got to the counter my flight had 35 mins till departure - the rule is you have to check in minimum 40 mins before so I was 5 mins late!!!!! They wouldn't let me on the flight. I was so upset an sat around for a few hours before booking a shuttle all the way bacK to Lagos.... Everyone thought it was the funniest thing when they saw me walking up the street with my bag , I was the joke of the town for the night but definitely not the first to miss a flight outta there!! The next day mummy helped me book another one for the next morning so I went back to Faro that arvo an stayed in a backpackers for the night so I wouldn't miss it again. I got a lift to the airport with 2 English guys who were also flying out an when I got to the counter the man said there was no one booked on the flight with my name!!! I couldn't believe it! But I had the booked papers printed an so he put me on it... So lucky!
I made it to Manchester an walked to the train station with 15 pounds left to my name, well the train was 23 pounds to get home wasn't it! I sat outside an balled my eyes out for at least 2 hours knowing I'd made it all the way here an only had an hour to go but couldn't make it.... It was the worst feeling in the world. I asked at the counter if there was anyway I could get to Huddersfield for under 15 pounds an somehow he made it happen by splitting up the tickets. I got off the train in Huddersfield an made my way to the bus stop for the final part of the journey... I had 1 pound left .... The bus cost 2 pounds! I did not care though I was just gonna get on anyway an when I did the bus driver smiled an said 'oh what part of Australia are you from?? My Unkle lives in Byron!' hahaha he was so nice an didn't worry that I was short on money, he just chatted about Byron with me until my stop came up.
When I walked in the door it was the biggest relief ever, I honestly couldn't believe I made it!!
I thanked god that night about a million times. What a trip!!!
