After successfully experiencing almost every area of Singapore on our last visit, we had booked our luxury pod accommodation in the only area we hadn't made it to, Arab area. The 'hostel' was amazing, it not only didn't smell bad, it actually smelt good, it was sparklingly clean and had a very relaxed environment. We had a double bed pod on the top bunk, with sockets, a light, hanging space and a little table. We made use of the free nespresso coffee and laundry facilities that we were much in need of after our lake trip.
We headed to a nearby outdoor food court that was recommended by the hostel and devoured some delicious 'drunken duck' before exploring the local area. Arab town is, as all of Singapore, very clean and well presented. There's a large mosque at the centre which sadly had lots of scaffolding up due to some ongoing repairs. Claire got us involved in a tourist questionnaire, she felt sorry for the woman who was clearly struggling to find volunteers, in return we both got free souvenirs which was a bonus. There are two main streets, one with hundreds of fabric/silk shops, a little like Tooting High Street, the other with bars and restaurants, most of which offer shisha to smoke. We treated ourselves to an afternoon beer but turned down the strawberry flavoured shisha.
That evening we headed to what seemed to be a very popular local restaurant. We were unsure what most of the things on the menu were so we went with the waiter's recommendation. It was at this point that Claire made the huge blunder of asking for beer in a Muslim restaurant, she got a lychee juice. The food was indeed delicious, but also horrifically spicy so after Greg spluttered his way through it, we had to make a quick escape to find a beer in order to numb the pain.
The following morning it was time to leave South East Asia and set off on the next leg of our trip...Japan!
