I came across the quote "Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer" early last year. While I don't agree entirely (I also think you can pay for education and this enrichens you too), it has taken me until now to realise how true it is.
Around the same time, out of nowhere, I caught the travel bug. I can't even remember why or what caused it. All I knew is that I HAD to get out of New Zealand. For me, the travel bug has been like an annoying itch that I can scratch but then I need more..and more.. In July 2012 we travelled to Rarotonga for our 5th anniversary. The itch eased but I wasn't satisfied. I desperately wanted to get out, to explore and discover. i didn't even care where! At times I would have gladly got on the next plane to Greenland! I didn't care where I ended up, I just knew I needed to begin the journey. And now that we have traveled as far away as we possibly could, the itch is still present! If anything, its even stronger because so many countries are within an hour or two away.
We leave for Prague on Wednesday morning. Here's a break down of costs:
- Bus ticket from Berlin to Prague: 20 euros- $32.04 NZD.
- 5 nights accomodation in Prague (3 star hotel, nothing fancy!): 70 euros - $128. 14
- Prague Pub Crawl (1 hour of ALL you can drink shots, wine & beer, entry into 3 bars + the biggest club in Europe, free t-shirt woop!
): 20 euros- 32.04
- An average beer in Prague: 500ml bottle 25 CZK- $1.59 NZD.
As you can see, it's cheap as chips to travel! Most European countries will cost under 50 euros (80 NZD) to fly to which makes it so tempting to pack up and just go!
We have decided that every country we visit, we have a "bucket list" type of agenda that we want to complete. Our German list is very long and we are adding to it all the time.. So far we have only achieved a few of things on the list E.G: Drink a glass of Gluhwein (hot wine), visit Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Have a traditional German christmas etc..
Prague also has it's own bucket list! Here's a few of our must-do's and I'm sure we will add more when we get there!
- Visit the Prague castle and Charles Bridge.
- Go on the pub crawl and have a shot of Absinthe for the first time!
- Czech is said to be the third hardest language to learn in the world (after Chinese and Russian) so I want to learn to say the very basics- hello, thanks, goodbye etc.
- Live as authentically as possible- eating at Czech restraunts, avoiding the tourist traps, exploring the side streets and getting to know the "real" Czech republic.
I also want to say a HUGE thanks to those who have put forward suggestions of what they want to read about, E.G how much everything is costing in New Zealand dollars. Anymore suggestions or questions you have are most welcome and we'll do our best to answer them in the next blog.
Schönen Tag noch! :) (Have a good day!)
