Berlin is such an incredible city I figured it deserved a blog all of it's own. First of all, everyone loves a few fun facts! ;)
- Berlin is Germany's largest city with a population of 3.5 million people
- This city is drowning in unbelieveable history!!
- It is a city of extremes. Extremely old historic buildings with state of the art sky scrapers as next door neighbours.
- Suprisingly green! Filled with parks, lakes, rivers and playgrounds, it's not your typical city!
- Is absolutely huge.
We live on the outskirts of Berlin, about a 25 minute train ride into the center. Before I came here, I pictured it to be like 5x Auckland Cities all mashed together. To me, it is like lots of little towns all rolled into one big area. For the art, history or museum lover, it is heaven! There is ALWAYS something happening, it has an incredible vibe about it that is both exciting and buzzing! At the same time, this excitement is calmed by the numerous historic buildings and landmarks dotted around the city.
There are a bizillion bars, clubs and restraunts! Some clubs are open every night of the week till all hours of the morning. It is an incredibly international city- you will see people representing from all corners of the globe here!
As I said earlier, it is also a city of extremes. Streets lined with top end brands from louis vouitton to gucci have homeless people and families begging for food and money outside of them.
For those into the luxurious brands mentioned above, KaDeWa (Kaufhaus des Westens) is Berlin's largest mall (Europe's second largest) attracting over 50,000 people a day. We felt overwhelmed and intimidated by the 6 story high mall with nothing under the price tag of 50euro's. Ry picked up a plain t-shirt that cost over 200euros. We laughed and left ;)
You can reach anywhere in Berlin with the extensive rail (U-Bahna and S-Bahn), tram and bus services. For a city of it's size, its very accessible.
Overall, Berlin is extremely cheap. Turkish Bistro's are on nearly every corner where you can get a full on meal for an 5 euro's a person. It has a vibrance about it that makes it easy to see why it is often ranked as one of the best cities in the world. To sum it up- if you're in Berlin- you will never be bored!
