Well since I last updated we have been busy, busy, busy! The day after Kaikoura we hopped on our big green bus and travelled north to Nelson! Nelson itself wasn't a particularily exciting place and was a bit dodgy on a night out but the scenery (as the rest of New Zealand is) was gorgeous and we ventured on a short walk up a hill to the very centre of New Zealand which was pretty cool and we walked for a further 2 hours or so to the local beach.
After spending two nights in Nelson we jumped on the bus once again to Westport but with the Kiwi Experience its never a straight journey to the next destination there a few stops along the way. On our journey to Westport we stopped at:
- Nelson Lakes National Park where we walked for about half an hour around a beautiful lake whilst watching some pretty speedy boats, and
- Murchison where we had some lunch
We pulled into Buller adventure tours who were there to offer us opurtunites for some adventure activities in Westport, we chose horseriding! We donned our wellies and put our helmets on then it was time for us to get on our horse. Leeroy had a horse called 'Lady' who was a bit temprmental and wasn't much of a lady as she kept on farting! G'bo had 'Walter' who tended to wander off and get into trouble with Leeroy (another horse, not our Leeroy!). Our friend Chris was on Leeroy who was new to this game and quite random and I was on Joe the biggest of the horses and apparently the leader but he was a big softy really! We had an ace time horseriding and it is pretty scary! We tried a bit of trotting which was a bit painful on the old bum until you get the hang of the technique then we sampled a canter which was more fun because it was faster and more comfortable! Then we strolled down the river back to the place. I had a really good day horseriding, love it! Once we got back we had a mass game of football in the evening then had an early night ready for tomorrows activities!
The journey the following day to Lake Mahinapua was filled with breaks, we stopped for a couple of walks and photo stops and saw the famous pancake rocks. At Lake Mahinapua we were staying at a notorious pub with eccentric Las the landlord. This guy is 81 and has a bus load of 50 people every day arriving at his pub who all have a fancy dress party. I don't envy him. Our fancy dress theme was 'what you wanted to be when your older', as we only had charity shops to get stuff from and limited time, we decided to change the theme slightly to what we thought we'd be instead, so Leeroy was an old pervert, G'bo was a senial old man and I was a drunk old man! The photos speak for themselves but we had others dressed as Wrestlers, tarzan, men as women, loads of crazies it was a quality night!
The following day the driver thought it would be a good idea to stop at a museum as the first stop, thats the last thing I wanna be doing on a hangover, crazy scenes! Anyway we carried on and had a couple more stops where there were a few walks to do. To be honest it was a bit of a long journey for no apparent reason and we all got a bit frustrated but its ok. We arrived in Franz Josef which is where I am now, the place is beautiful with massive mountains surrounding the place and we're climbing a glacier tomorrow up 35m high vertical walls using crampons and spikey shoes, can't wait! I'll update again soon, the Kiwi Experience is non-stop!
