Welcome!
Sunday morning in Kruger ...must be one of the nicest places to spend an idle day. Not that today will be idle we still have so much to do...but this camp is full of interuptions Christina and I have had to walk out and investigate a loud tapping from one of the trees around the campsite. A Golden -tailed Woodpecker chiseling off the bark of a Rain tree (Lochocarpus capassa) in it's never ending search for grubs and beetles. The drive down from the North was uneventful apart from seeing huge numbers of vultures (mainly African white-backed) and we look forward to staying in one place for more than one or two nights. The camp is looking promising but we are camped next to one of the experimental Bat Houses, houses that have been specially erected to encourage bats not to take over tourist acommodations. The new bat acommodation is a great sucess but the numbers of bats occupying the houses is large and the guano pile underneath the "bat house" is growing , so is the smell! Bats too will be part of our research. The bats utilizing the bat houses are mainly the smaller insectivorus Slit faced bats and not Megachiroptera (Fruit Bats). At last, Christina is out of the shower and she can talk to you now!
Well, what more can one say....yes, that bat guano is a terrible smell. Just when you think you're getting used to it, the wind stirs and whew! Nature...it's disgusting and it's everywhere. Other than that Letaba should be a good place to spend a few days. I know you will all be terribly excited - I am shooting leaves and bark today, that is if the wind cooperates. Til then trudge on.
