OK well last night i tried Cuy for the first time. For those of you in the dark, that is the lovely Peruvian delicacy also known as guinea pig at home!! It was ok but don´t think i´ll be having it again as the crunching bones was not quite to my taste... The restaurant we ate in was really nice though and we got chatting to the lady that ran it and she has put us in touch with someone who runs a really nice hostel for our return to Cusco after the Inca Trail.
Unfortunately our paragliding got cancelled due to "bad weather" apparently although it has been the best day for weather here since we arrived!! We suspect they wanted a lie-in on a Sunday but hopefully we´ll be going tomorrow instead (another 7.30am start).
Undeterred however, we decided to trek upto Sacsayhuaman in the hills above Cusco. It was quite a climb but definitely worth it! From there we continued up into the mountains to visit two or three more Inca sites in the mountains - Qenqo, Puca Pucara and the springs at Tambomachay. The furthest of these was some 15km from our starting point and halfway to Pisac. I think the round trip must have been between 25 and 30km but we made good time, spurred on by the fact we needed some lunch!!!! We both feel a bit more confident about our Inca Trail now as we reached a height of about 3,600m above sea level at Qenqo and continued uphill for at least another hour so i think we must have reached at least 3,800m. The highest point on the Inca Trail is 4,200m so we should be ok!
We now have a pass that runs for 9 days to visit some of the ruins and museums in Cusco so we´re hoping to do that over the next few days or so. Our aim is to get as many hole-punched as possible!!!
