We´ve now just left Arequipa and today arrived in Nasca so I thought I would update you on the rest of our stay in Arequipa. We unfortunately didn´t manage to get booked onto a tour to Colca Canyon because everywhere was booked up. Ah well, at least I have another reason to come back!
Since the last journal update, Kim and I booked ourselves in for a massage for Kim’s birthday. We also changed rooms at our hotel to one that had a jacuzzi to really live it up! I managed to leave Kim for a little while too during the week to pick up a few little things for her birthday (a cake, some candles, matches – hardest thing to get when you have no idea how to say it in Spanish, a card and a llama keyring!).
The day before Kim’s birthday, we decided to check out some of Arequipa´s other sites. We found a second convent that we decided to do a tour of. It was really quite informative about all the artwork that they have there. Our guide was very good too. Her English was excellent and she knew all about the place and the artefacts.
We also went to a museum close to the centre of Arequipa about the children sacrificed by the Incas, found on the volcanoes around Arequipa. The guide was really good again, speaking excellent English and showed us around the museum very efficiently. We even got to see “Juanita”, the famous mummy found recently on the volcano. She was kept in a freezer and you could just about make her out through the glass. It was very interesting indeed.
Anyway so we get to Kim’s birthday and the day begins with an earthquake!!! Yes the room begins to shake and it's only after a second or two that I realise its a quake. Very strange but quite cool to actually experience one. Fortunately, all the buildings in Peru are (supposedly) "earthquake-proof" so nothing damaged! Kim was in the shower at the time and thought that the guy next door had fallen against the wall or something! It was definitely stronger than that though! Anyway, after the quake, we go for our massages. We walk into the massage room and we’re greeted by two blind older ladies who introduce themselves as our hosts. We both were a bit taken aback but actually they were very good and after a good hour and a half of massage both of us felt quite good (although I did feel like a hundred knots had been found that I hadn´t known about before).
Later that evening we moved into our jaccuzi room and ran the jacuzzi with plenty of snacks and a few drinks. It wasn’t until Kim had eaten a whole packet of Pringles that she began to feel a little unwell and soon after, threw up. I wasn’t feeling great because I’d had a cold for the last day or so and was sneezing constantly. After Kim had thrown up she immediately felt a lot better but not perfect. I decided I’d go grab some food from the Chinese we’d tried the other night. On returning with the food though, I was feeling pretty awful and only managed a few mouthfuls before I too was sick and then had diahorrea from then on. Fortunately I still had some Loperamide left and took some before we took our bus to Nasca. I’m feeling a whole lot better now but still have a horrible cold. At least I’m able to eat and drink again now.
Tomorrow we’ve booked a flight over the Nasca lines in a small 3-seat aeroplane. It should be good fun and we’re both looking forward to it. We’re hoping that there won’t be too much turbulence as that will definitely not be fun in such a small plane!
