Well our bus journey to Ooty was and adventure. We were booked on a deluxe bus which left at 7am. The journey was fine until we started the climb up the hillsto the summit to reach Ooty. The roads were really bad, pothole everywhere, they werereally deep in some places and the driver overtook in some reallydangerousplaces. We felt the pain in our bums and saw the views ahead from our seats. On the slow climb up we saw tea plantations and some really lovely views. Near to Ooty I (kam) saw a really bad accident. A man all suited and booted on a moterbike whizzed past the coach inbrave move, unfortunatly he hadn't governed on the coach ahead or the bend with a good carrier coming around. He obviously couldn't fit through the gap, turned his handle bars and headed for the goods carriers wheels. Now he was wedged under thecarrier and the bushes, his back wheel still going and legs in the air. He was luckily still alive. We guess his dry cleaning bill is gonna be high!!!!
We were looking forward to arriving and when we pulled in we thought oh no its another overcrowded town, well yes because every indian and their family comes here for a holiday. We found out all the places were booked and high season caused this. Great!!!!
We got a taxi to whizz us around looking for places some were really bad, some were just awful, but eventually we found a really nice room, at a really extortionate price. We booked in for 2 nights and thought this is gonna blow our budget out of the water.
We relaxed for a while then ventured out to get some cash, enquire about tours and visit the Rose gardens. We also went to the bus station to try and book onward tickets but found out you buy them on the bus. We walked to the Rose gardens as the rickshaw drivers were trying to rip us off. The walk was uphill for about 3kms. When we did get there so did the whole of India, and as you can guess it was full of roses with odd names. We walked around for a while and came across two monks which we were both fascinated by. Ellie really thought they looked like me and I saw one pick up a dying worm and gently put it to the side. We decided to walk back and stop of to get a bite to eat in the Sidewalk cafe. The evenings got really cold and for the first time out came our hoodies and we snuggled up in our blanket.
Next day we got up early and decided todo some sight seeing. We tooka walk to the Botanical gardens and found them to be lovely and not very peaceful. Security men were walking around withsticks ready to pounce and familys as far as the eye could see. It reminded us of Leonardsleegardens in West Sussex. We then went to the boating lake and got a Rickshaw. We got there and yes hoards of excited familys queueing for a go on the paddle boats. We queued for a while but got fed up and left, a bit dissapointing. We thought we would do some real picture taking at the magnificent viewpoints, the real reason we came to Ooty. We got a really expensive taxi to take us up a winding road. The minute we got to the carpark entrance there was a full on traffic jam. We were told to get out and walk the rest of the way up. When we got to the view point it was hell, you could hardly move and every shot we took had a persons head in. We were bitterly dissapointed and felt maybe we should return to the taxi and go back to our hotel as Ooty had drained ourbudget and souls. We think Ooty would be a lovely place if it wasn't in high season when everythingis grossly overpriced and grossly over populated with tourists. Wereturned, ate at the sidewalk cafe again and returned to our overpriced hotel to get some sleep for our early start in the morning!!!!
Next stop Madurai!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
